Chapter 9
Mel had been awake and busy long before dawn. Sheâd hurriedly dressed, pulled her hair into a ponytail, then after seeing to the cats, swapped her flip flops for a pair of Rosaâs boots that sheâd found by the back door. They fit better than the giant ones sheâd worn yesterday. Sheâd wondered who they belonged to, beginning to think Aunt Rosa wasnât the staid spinster type after all, that maybe sheâd never married because she enjoyed the single life too much. Sheâd giggled, thinking they might have a black sheep on this farm as well as all the other animals. Feeling ready for anything, sheâd fed and played with the increasingly boisterous and adventurous puppies then grabbed a flashlight from a kitchen drawer to go walk the adult dogs. To her delight, the cool, silvery light of the big, glorious moon lit her way perfectly, leaving her no need for the flashlight after all. The walk had been blissful, and if sheâd had someone to share it with would have been wonderfully romantic.
At one point, her thoughts had drifted to her mother, who kept reassuring her everything was fine but still hadnât had the test results. Mel knew she needed to stay positive but really wanted to hold her mother in her arms and give her a big hug. It was hard being away from her right now, even if this was where her mom needed her to be. Sheâd focused on that, managing to return to her earlier happy mood. Her mind had wandered back to romance and sheâd daydreamed as sheâd walked, letting her subconscious control whose hand she held on her fantasy walk. One moment it was the gorgeous, sensitive Lucas, with his handsome face, gentle eyes, soft voice, and tender manner, then the next it would flicker and change, Simonâs grinning face appearing. Darn! She thought she was getting over him. Why was he creeping into her special moment? Sheâd guessed it was inevitable and to be honest, it had seemed too easy. Sheâd expected to have to fight to get him out of her system and spend a lot more time crying over him. Determinedly sheâd pushed him away, refocusing on her Spanish hunk. Sheâd just got lost in the fantasy again when all of a sudden the image of a short, dark, surly Spaniard broke into the scene, lurking like a dark shadow from a nightmare, watching over them and totally ruining the moment. It was weird how he always managed to get the timing spot on to spoil her alone time with Lucas, even when it wasnât real! He was an unexpected glitch, but at least the image of Simon had fled. He wouldnât have stood up to Domingo that was for sure. One glower would have sent him running. At least the guardian devil watching over her was useful for something.
Although Domingo hadnât exactly ingratiated himself with her, she had to admit heâd been a godsend over the last few
